In 1988, Geert Welleman, Hein Delabie, and Paul Vanrespaille, three friends who were serving in the military in Germany, decided to start brewing their own beer. They studied brewing techniques and experimented with different recipes in their barracks. After years of practice, they launched their first beer, Giesbaargs Muurken, in 2011.
Giesbaargs Muurken is a blond beer with a 7% alcohol content and 14 degrees plato. It is unfiltered and re-fermented in the bottle, giving it a unique artisanal flavour. The beer is named after the Muur van Geraardsbergen, a famous cycling climb in Belgium.
In addition to their blond beer, Giesbaargs Muurken also brews a brown beer. It is also a 7% alcohol content beer, but it is unfiltered and has a more pronounced malt flavour. The brown beer is a popular choice for winter drinking.
Giesbaargs Muurken is a small brewery, but their beers are highly respected by beer lovers in Belgium and beyond. The brewery has won numerous awards for their beers, including a gold medal at the World Beer Awards in 2012.
